Piano Competition

Simon Xu

France

Born in France to Chinese parents, pianist Simon Xu moved to the United States when he was eight-years-old, and began taking his first piano lessons a year later. Since then, he has performed throughout the northeastern United States and has been a prize-winner at several international competitions in the area. Most recently, in 2013, he placed first at the Metropolitan International Competition in New York and third at the Hartford Chopin Competition. Later that same year, he was a second prize winner at the Liszt-Garrison Competition in Baltimore and was subsequently invited to perform in Senlis, France. In 2014, he performed Scriabin’s Fifth Sonata at Weill Recital Hall in New York for the Metropolitan Music Festival’s Winter Gala.

Simon is a student of Helena Vesterman and Solomon Mikowsky, the latter with whom he studied at the Manhattan School of Music while completing a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance. He was also a recipient of the prestigious Arthur Balsam and Vera Blacker Scholarships.

Simon is currently preparing for upcoming competitions in the fall and winter of 2015. He also holds a deep passion for teaching, with his studio numbering over eighteen students, and has taught privately in Boston for the last four years.
